About Me

Welcome! My name is AnnMarie McCarthy, I am a Children’s picture book Author & illustrator living in Limerick, Ireland. I graduated from the Limerick School of Art and Design in 1993 with a Degree in Fashion Design. I spent numerous years working in the Irish Fashion Industry, designing both women’s and children’s knitwear. I also completed a diploma at London Art College in Children’s Book illustration.

My illustrations are vibrant watercolours and are bright and playful, which engage and capture the imaginations of young children.

Working in vibrant colours is something I have always enjoyed. Bright colours always cheer me up on a wet day!!!

In the case of children’s book illustrations I feel they work particularly well. Children enjoy an illustration that comes to life and offers that feel good factor.

The blank spaces and white backgrounds are very important in my work, they give space to the reader to think and invite them to use their imagination to consider what else could be going on in the story”.

I have colaborated with Ré Ó Laighléis on a series of children’s books, ‘Fungie’ based on Dingle’s most famous resident. As these books are bilingual English/ Irish they can be used as an educational tool in schools. Beautiful painted watercolour illustrations bring to life this amazing dolphin and his many friends in the sea including Mr. Octopus and the old turtle. These books enable children to take home memories of Fungie and treasure them for life.

The Fungie series has touched the hearts of lots of children and I am extremely grateful. The books were inspired by holidays spent as a child and an adult in the wonderful seaside town of Dingle. When my daughter was small I wanted to get her a picture book about Fungie, but nothing jumped out at me so I decided to write her one. As many people come to see this famous dolphin each year it is wonderful to take home the memory in the form of a book.”

There are many things that inspire my work, mainly the events of daily life and funny things that happen. I love watching animals – the way they move and interact with each other. Sometimes I can see a character develop without even being conscious of it. I am like a sponge listening to people telling stories that can often spark an idea for a book.

In September 2013 I published my new book “Bubble The Rainbow Dragon”. This is a story about of a baby dragon who brings a smile to the faces of the people he meets. It is now available.
